Wang Anjiang
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
In 1968, Wang Anjiang began to study the ancient songs of the Miao people. Through diligent study, coupled with his natural gifts of voice and memory, he developed a singing style marked by sincere, lingering melodies and a gracefully flowing delivery, carrying an unmistakable air of archaic refinement. The ancient songs he sang are vivid in language, strong in generality, rich in philosophy, and reward repeated listening. Their content consists largely of antiphonal singing at feasts, spoken-sung exchanges from working life, and casual transmission over tea and leisure hours. Across decades of performance and teaching, Wang Anjiang earned the deep respect and warm praise of his fellow Miao. While singing and transmitting these traditions, he also collected and collated twelve bodies of Miao ancient song, amounting to roughly 240,000 characters, including Ka Tian Pi Di (Creating the World), Da Liang Zao Zhu (Raising Beams and Setting Pillars), Niang Jiu Ge (The Brewing Song), Feng Mu Ge (The Maple Song), Da Jin Yun Yin (Striking Gold and Drawing Silver), and Zhu Ri Zao Yue (Casting the Sun and Forging the Moon). These valuable written records are of immeasurable significance for promoting ethnic culture, strengthening ethnic unity, and studying the ancient history and culture of the Miao people. In 2006, the People's Government of Taijiang County established the Wang Anjiang Ancient Song Collation Office specifically to organize this precious material. In the same year, the Personnel Department of Guizhou Province awarded him a Senior Singer of Ancient Songs certificate.
