Lineage & School of Heritage

In 1947 she entered the Yongfeng Society to study the art, and later transferred to the Northeast Opera School, which was merged into the China Peking Opera School in 1955. She studied under Zhang Baofang, Xing Weiming, Guan Shengming, Sun Futing, Li Jinquan, Wang Yumin and others, and later received personal instruction from Li Duokui, specialising in the laodan (old woman) role.

Female, Han ethnicity, born in January 1939, a native of Dandong, Liaoning Province. She joined the China Peking Opera Company in 1958. She has a solid grounding in basic skills; her voice is high, bright and resonant, vigorous and powerful, her range of roles is broad, and her acting is generous and full of passion. She is skilled at flexibly employing vocal melody and at integrating the performance techniques of different role types to create distinctive character images. Her representative works include She Tai Jun Kang Hun (Lady She Resists the Marriage), Yang Men Nü Jiang (Women Generals of the Yang Family), Chi Sang Zhen (Chisang Town), Qiang Xiang Ling (The Upright Official), Ba Yan (Cancelling the Banquet), Yue Mu Ci Zi (Mother Yue Tattoos Her Son), Sha Jia Bang (Sha Family Creek) and Hong Deng Ji (The Red Lantern).

Honors & Recognition

She is a representative bearer of Peking Opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. She has trained a number of outstanding laodan performers of Peking Opera, passing on and promoting the art of the laodan role in Peking Opera.
