She graduated from the Beijing Opera School in 1968, having studied under Sun Futing and others, specialising in the laodan (old woman) role.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Female, Han ethnicity, born in January 1948, a native of Beijing. She is a National First-Class Performer and an expert receiving the special government allowance of the State Council. In 1981 she became a disciple of Li Jinquan and He Shengqing. She has performed the plays Li Kui Tan Mu (Li Kui Visits His Mother), Chi Sang Zhen (Chisang Town) and Yu Huang Hou · Da Long Pao (Meeting the Empress · Striking the Dragon Robe), adapted and arranged Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Soup), Jin Gui Ji (The Golden Tortoise) and San Guan Yan (The Banquet at San Guan), and starred in the newly written Peking Opera Feng Yu Tong Ren Tang (Tong Ren Tang in Wind and Rain). Her performance respects tradition without being bound by fixed conventions; she creatively applies the characteristics and expressive means of the role type to portray stage characters, enriching and developing the art of the laodan role and forming a distinctive artistic style of her own. Her disciples include Zhai Mo, Hou Yu, Sun Liying and Huang Lizhu.

Honors & Recognition

She is a representative bearer of Peking Opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. She has received the China Drama Plum Blossom Award, the Mei Lanfang Gold Award, the Wenhua Performance Award of the Ministry of Culture, the Shanghai Magnolia Award for Dramatic Performance and the China Golden Record Award.
