Male, Han ethnicity, born in September 1945, a native of Tianjin. He is a National First-Class Performer. He is a second-generation disciple of the Yang (Baosen) school of the sheng role in Peking Opera. He graduated from the Tianjin Opera School in 1965. While at school he studied for many years with the celebrated accompanist Yang Baozhong, which enriched his musical sensibility and gave him a clear and accurate sense of rhythm, laying the foundation for the development of his stage art. In 1965 he became a performer with the Tianjin Peking Opera Troupe, and drawing on the sweetness of his voice, the mellow richness of its flavour and its blend of strength and softness, he gave full play to his strengths in performance. His vocal devices, the beng yin, chen yin, men yin and pa yin, and his wide-ranging sou yin are highly distinctive, and his use of the shui sou, the geda qiang and the ku qiang is particularly ingenious. His representative productions include Yang Jia Jiang (The Yang Family Generals), Shi Jie Ting · Kong Cheng Ji · Zhan Ma Su (Losing Jieting · The Empty City Stratagem · Beheading Ma Su) and the modern Peking operas Hua Ziliang and Hu Guo Jiang Jun (The General Who Defends the Nation).

Honors & Recognition

He is a representative bearer of Peking Opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1991 he received the Eighth China Drama Plum Blossom Award.
