Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1945 in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province. National representative bearer of Chaozhou Wood Carving, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a master of arts and crafts of Guangdong Province. To deepen his theoretical grounding, he undertook advanced studies at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1977. Building on his preservation and assimilation of traditional Chaozhou gold-lacquer woodcarving, he innovated boldly, overcoming the traditional form's weakness of seeking mere surface fullness and an even, crowded, all-pervading fill (yun yun za za tong tong); he ventured to carve from thick timber blanks, bringing out contrast, volume, and a sense of space. Points, lines, and planes are combined in rich layering: dense yet orderly, with alternating density and openness, movement and stillness, and close attention to the theme and its meaning. Representative works include Mu Guiying Gua Shuai (Mu Guiying Takes Command) and Tangren Shiyi (Poetic Mood of the Tang People), among others.
