Chen Peichen
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1950 in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province. National representative bearer of Chaozhou Wood Carving, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a master of Chinese arts and crafts. In 1962, Chen Peichen entered the Chaozhou Municipal Research Institute of Arts and Crafts together with his father Chen Shunqiang to study the traditional techniques of Chaozhou woodcarving; through more than forty years of artistic practice he attained consummate skill, and in the design and execution of the large-scale woodcarving Xia Xie Lou (Basket of Shrimp and Crabs) he broke new ground with a style entirely his own. He handles every technique of Chaozhou woodcarving with ease; his works are original in conception, full in composition, finely made, delicate in workmanship, openwork-thin, and true to life in their detail. He also organized and founded the Chen Shunqiang Woodcarving Art Promotion Association, encouraging fellow practitioners in Chaozhou to cooperate and advance together. Representative works include Xuanlu Zhao (Cover for a Xuan Censer), Fu Rao De Nanhai (The Bountiful South China Sea), and Xia Xie Lou (Basket of Shrimp and Crabs), among others.
