At the age of fourteen he was admitted to the Lingqiu County Luoluoqiang Troupe, where he studied under An Fuguo and Zhang Youguo and specialized in xusheng (bearded male) roles.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in March 1956 in Lingqiu County, Shanxi Province. Building on the art he inherited from his teachers, he drew widely on the strengths of others and borrowed and innovated boldly in accordance with his own qualities, forming an artistic style of his own. His vocal delivery is finely wrought; he is especially smooth and free, supple and fluent in his use of the beigongyin, the falsetto flourish an octave above at the end of a phrase, and he is skilled at using the various metrical aria types and singing techniques to portray a character's inner life and to create a range of stage images. His representative productions include Yanzhi (The Rouge), Tao Li Mei, Hui Long Zhuan (The Tale of the Returning Dragon), Yang Bajie You Chun (Yang Bajie's Spring Outing), Xiao Erhei Jiehun (Little Erhei Marries), Jia Bu Chuqu de Guniang (The Girl Who Cannot Be Married Off) and Chun Sao Qu Fu (Chun's Wife Takes a Husband), among others.
Honors & Recognition
He is a national representative bearer of Lingqiu Luoluoqiang, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In recent years he has devoted his main energies to training new talent, actively taking disciples and passing on his art.
