Feng Baoquan
Lineage & School of Heritage
In 1950 he joined the Yuncheng County Workers and Peasants Opera Society, which was renamed the Shandong Provincial Liuzi Opera Troupe in 1959, and studied under artists including Wang Quanzhen, Hou Jingfu and Wang Chuanming, systematically learning Liuzi Opera vocal music and accompaniment.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
When the troupe was transferred to the provincial level in 1959, he worked in it as principal flutist, vocal designer and composer. His flute playing is full-toned, supported by ample breath and nimble fingers. Unconstrained by tradition, he drew on the strengths of many schools and was bold in innovation, readily absorbing elements of his time into his compositions, so that his works possess both the traditional charm of Liuzi Opera and a contemporary spirit. His representative works include traditional plays such as Sun An Dong Ben (Sun An Memorializes the Throne), Hong Luo Ji (The Red Silk Robe) and Huang Sang Dian, as well as modern plays such as Shajiabang and Dujuan Shan (Azalea Mountain). Out of his love for Liuzi Opera, he served successively as vocal instructor for several cohorts of Liuzi Opera students.
