Female, of Han ethnicity, born in February 1932 in Shanghai. In 1940 she entered the training school of the Siyou Society, also known as the Siji Class, and became a disciple of Gai Yuetang, an artist of the all-male troupes, specializing in huadan (young female) roles. In 1943 she performed in the Hangzhou, Jiaxing and Huzhou region. In 1945 she returned to Shanghai. In 1951 she joined the East China Experimental Yueju Opera Troupe, which later became the Shanghai Yueju Opera Theatre. In 1953 she took part in the filming of the colour opera film Liang Shanbo yu Zhu Yingtai (The Butterfly Lovers). She specializes in huadan and is also accomplished in huashan, qingyi and daomadan roles. Her voice has a comparatively wide range and a sweet timbre; her representative works include Da Jinzhi (Striking the Golden Branch), Xixiang Ji (Romance of the West Chamber), Hua Zhong Junzi (The Gentleman Among Flowers), Mu Guiying, Qiliang Liao Gong Yue (A Melancholy Moon over the Liao Palace), San Kan Yumei (Three Glimpses of the Imperial Sister), Tao Li Mei (Peach, Plum and Apricot) and Shiyi Lang (The Eleventh Son).
Honors & Recognition
Representative bearer of Yueju (Shaoxing Opera), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1952 she took part in the first National Opera Observation and Performance Festival sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, playing Yinxin in Liang Shanbo yu Zhu Yingtai (The Butterfly Lovers) and winning third prize for acting.
