Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1944 in Dongyang, Zhejiang Province. He is a master of Chinese arts and crafts. While inheriting the traditional craft, Feng Wentu placed great emphasis on innovation and development, originating such techniques and forms as 'half-round carving' (banyuan diao), 'self-shaping woodcarving' (zixing mu diao), 'bark-cell carving' (shupi bao diao), and 'root-and-stone carving' (genshi diao), all suited to the style of the times. Feng Wentu excels at carving figures and animals; the ornamental components he carves for traditional architecture are rich in layering, and their subjects largely reflect local customs and ways of life.
