She began studying the art at fourteen, receiving her first training from Wang Mingzhi, then studying under Yuan Biyu and Zhang Yunxia and taking Shen Yunhai and Guan Xiaobin as her masters; she specializes in the guimen dan (boudoir maiden) and qingyi roles.

A National Class One performer and an expert receiving the special government allowance of the State Council. She is particularly distinguished for her singing, with a refined technique that is sweet, round and richly nuanced, full of artistic tension and beauty. She has taken leading roles in nearly a hundred plays; such representative works as Hudie Bei (The Butterfly Cup), Li Shuangshuang, Bairi Yuan (A Hundred Days of Fate), Xu Si Guniang (Fourth Sister Xu), Xiuhua Nü (The Embroidering Girl) and Youyou Liuye He (The Gently Flowing Willow-Leaf River) have had a wide influence on audiences, and many of her arias have become Chu Opera classics that are widely sung.
Honors & Recognition
Female, Han ethnicity, born in February 1945 in Hanchuan, Hubei Province, and died in February 2014. She is a representative bearer of Chu Opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1986 she won the Outstanding Award for aria singing at the First National Modern Opera Competition, and in 1993 the Outstanding Performance Award at the National Exchange Performances of Local Operas. Several generations of Chu Opera performers whom she trained have grown into the mainstays of their respective troupes.
