Ren Senkui
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A lover of traditional opera from childhood, he first performed with amateur village troupes and then studied chou (comic) roles under Guo Xiaojun and Xi Zhagen, applying himself with great diligence. At 17 he joined the county troupe. Endowed with strong artistic talent and a diligent, eager learner, he steadily raised his performing level and became a leading chou actor among the scores of troupes active in eastern Shanxi. His acting was distinctive, witty, and humorous. He played the bandit company commander in Wang Gui and Li Xiangxiang, the old gambler in Jia Qi (Marrying Off a Wife), and Cangwa in Juan Xi Tong (The Rolled Mat), and his representative works include Xi Zhong Shu (The Book in the Play), He Deng Hui (River Lantern Fair), Fu Jia Ying (Fujia Camp), Pan Shi Ling (Panshi Ridge), and Bang Zhu Jiehun (Marriage by Tying to a Pillar). Over decades in the profession he studied his craft seriously within the troupe; after retirement he took on disciples and transmitted his art, actively participating in cultural performances and working to pass on yangge opera.
