Lineage & School of Heritage

Cengjiantan developed a love of the art of bamboo carving in childhood. At the age of twelve he was apprenticed to Wang Minsheng, the celebrated bamboo-carving master of Baoqing, and he thoroughly absorbed the essence of the Wang family's hereditary bamboo-carving techniques.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Cengjiantan excelled in bamboo-skin carving (carving upon the green outer skin of the bamboo) and in turned-bamboo carving (fanhuang zhuke). He mastered high relief, low relief, round sculpture, and openwork piercing, as well as both raised-line (yangke) and incised-line (yinke) engraving. He used the knife in place of the brush: his carving was seasoned and assured, his cutting strokes fluent and unrestrained, and his artistry extraordinary. The compositions of his works are rigorous and meticulous, with close attention to the interplay of fullness and void. He was equally adept at figures, landscapes, and flower-and-bird subjects, and in his treatment he pursued the classical flavor of ancient fine-brush (gongbi) painting, precise and accurate, vivid and lifelike. Cengjiantan was not only a consummate craftsman but also an active teacher of apprentices, and he made a lasting contribution to the transmission of Baoqing bamboo carving. His representative works include Xiong Guan Canghai (Gazing Majestically upon the Vast Sea), Xiaoxiang Bajing (Eight Views of the Xiao-Xiang Rivers), and Dongting Yueyang Lou (Yueyang Tower on Lake Dongting).
