Li Zhengqin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
From childhood he was keen on all kinds of folk activities, and he heard village elders describe the ritual performances of luoguza opera. In 1962 he began singing zaxi and bangzi with an amateur troupe formed by villagers, during which he received the true transmission of the seniors Sun Futang and Wang Zuoming and specialized in secondary painted-face roles. His voice is high and his chanting bold and unrestrained; he excels at "liegui" (a principal movement sequence) and "baitao" (battle-formation routines). While preserving the original performance style of zaxi, he made breakthroughs in character makeup and martial technique, becoming the pillar actor of the Linyi County luoguza opera troupe and earning from the people of southern Shanxi the sobriquet "Little Yang Hushan." His representative works include Tong Que Tai (The Bronze Sparrow Terrace), Jiao Long Ju (The Flood Dragon Colt), and San Qing Zhuge (Three Visits to Zhuge Liang). During his lifetime he passed all his skills to his son and selected disciples to take part in zaxi performances, so that his art continues to be transmitted.
