Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Han ethnicity, born in April 1941, a native of Laoting County, Hebei Province. He began learning shadow-puppet carving in 1952, and from 1973 to 1989 worked in the Laoting County Shadow Puppet Troupe as an art designer, scene painter, and shadow-puppet carver. The figures he designed and carved are distinctive and novel in form, with fine and accomplished knife work and clear textures; the movements of pushing, pulling, turning, following, reversing, slowing, and hastening are rendered with lifelike vividness. His major representative works include Hong Sao (The Red Detachment Sister), Haidao Nü Minbing (Militia Women of the Island), Dujuan Shan (Azalea Mountain), Sun Wukong San Da Baigujing (Sun Wukong Thrice Defeats the White Bone Demon), Huoyan Shan (Mountain of Flames), Dongting Hu (Lake Dongting), and Baishe Zhuan (The Legend of the White Snake).
