Yu Xianglian
Lineage & School of Heritage
Yu Xianglian is the fourth-generation inheritor of the Jiangwan Shun clay-figurine toy shop, and she successively studied under Jiang Zixian, Zhang Aren, and Zhang Genbao. Her apprenticeship was arduous and rigorous, yet in the space of just a year and a half she had essentially mastered the complete set of techniques of the hand-pinched opera figurine (shounie xiwen).
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A woman of Han ethnicity, she was born in 1940 in Wuxi, Jiangsu. She is a national representative bearer of Clay Sculpture (Huishan clay figurines), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts, and a researcher of folk-art creation at the Chinese National Academy of Arts. She began making clay figurines at the age of eight, and at fifteen she took up the techniques of the refined hand-pinched opera figurine within the Huishan clay-figurine tradition, a line of transmission she has carried forward to the present day. In 1956 she was admitted to the Jiangsu Provincial Clay Sculpture and Polychrome Painting Training Class, where she systematically studied sketching, sculpture, color, life drawing, art theory, and the fundamentals of traditional opera. Yu Xianglian fully inherited the techniques of the Huishan hand-pinched opera figurine. Over more than fifty years of practice, she assimilated the strengths of the various celebrated masters and created many fine works of strong local cultural character. She restored more than four hundred historic masterpieces held by the former Wuxi Clay Figurine Museum, meeting the conservation requirement of restoring old pieces so that they retain their aged appearance, and she solved the technical problems that clay figurines fear water and are easily broken. She has also selflessly lectured and taught her craft in many places. Her representative works include Chuantong Da Afu (The Traditional Great Afu) and Siwei Guanyin (Guanyin in Contemplation).
