Wang Nanxian
Lineage & School of Heritage
Wang Nanxian's forebears made their living by making clay figurines, and she is the fourth-generation inheritor of this family tradition.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A woman of Han ethnicity, she was born in 1941 in Wuxi, Jiangsu. She is a national representative bearer of Clay Sculpture (Huishan clay figurines), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. In 1956, Wang Nanxian was admitted to the Jiangsu Provincial Clay Sculpture and Polychrome Painting Training Class, where she systematically studied sketching, sculpture, color, life drawing, art theory, and the fundamentals of traditional opera; her first teacher was Yu Renjin. She later studied polychrome painting at the Huishan Clay Figurine Factory under the master painter Chen Yuxiu. In the 1980s she made three trips to the Nanjing Museum to copy Qing-dynasty works, and she also received guidance from celebrated opera performers. Wang Nanxian fully inherited the polychrome painting and finishing (zhuangluan) techniques of the Huishan hand-pinched opera figurine, attaining the four essentials of Huishan painting summarized as new, clear, even, and vibrant. Skillfully employing these techniques, she continually created new works. Her representative works include Shoutao Pusa (Bodhisattva with the Longevity Peach) and Niannian Le (Joy Year after Year).
