Lineage & School of Heritage

Hu Shen learned the craft from his father, Hu Keqin, from early childhood, and he has worked in painted clay sculpture for more than sixty years.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

A man of Han ethnicity, he was born in 1931 in Fengxiang, Shaanxi. He is a national representative bearer of Clay Sculpture (Fengxiang clay sculpture), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a researcher of folk-art creation at the Chinese National Academy of Arts. Hu Shen's clay sculptures are of plain and archaic form, with exaggerated imagery, bright colors, strong contrasts, and flowing lines, presenting a handsome and dignified appearance. In the 1980s he was repeatedly invited to lecture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Central Academy of Arts and Design. His representative works include Nisu Ma (Clay-Sculpture Horse) and Nisu Da Zuohu (Clay-Sculpture Large Seated Tiger). Several of his children have actively learned the craft under him, and all of them are now able to produce clay sculptures independently.
