He first studied Peking opera under the Peking opera actor Jiang Wenkui. From 1942 he turned to Huaiju opera, studying under the Huaiju actor Shan Liankui.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Born in April 1929, he is a man of Han ethnicity from Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province. He is a National First-Class Performer. He came from a family of opera performers and first went on stage with his father at the age of seven. He specialized in the laosheng (old male) roles and also performed hongsheng (red-faced male) and heijing (black-faced painted-face) roles. He boldly absorbed the Qipai style of Peking opera; his acting was steady, weighty and natural, his singing loud, broad and resonant, earning him the name of a performer with a voice of steel, and he was inventive, paying close attention to inner characterization. In 1956 he took part in establishing the Jiangsu Provincial Huaiju Troupe. His representative plays include The Golden Water Bridge (Jin Shui Qiao), Striking the Golden Bough (Da Jin Zhi), Praising Diao (Zan Diao), Lord Guan Takes Leave of Cao Cao (Guan Gong Ci Cao), Beheading Yan Liang (Zhan Yan Liang) and Sacrificing His Wife and Trying His Wife (She Qi Shen Qi); The Golden Water Bridge and Striking the Golden Bough have been included in the teaching repertoire of opera schools.
Honors & Recognition
He is a representative bearer of Huaiju opera, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He has trained a group of outstanding performers, including Zhang Shaoliang, Wang Zongzhen, Zhou Haichen and Li Fusheng.
