Lineage & School of Heritage

Wang Xuefeng is the son of Wang Lantian, a renowned folk clay-toy artist, and the ninth-generation inheritor of the Junxian clay-toy tradition. Wang Xuefeng began learning the craft from his father at the age of eight and fully absorbed his father's authentic teaching; his artistic career has now spanned more than forty years.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

A man of Han ethnicity, he was born in 1954 in Hebi, Henan. Junxian nigugu clay whistles can be classified by form into three main categories, namely human figures, animals, and birds, and they include several hundred varieties. Wang Xuefeng's works are vivid in form, delicate in handling, and gorgeous in color, capturing a convincing likeness in both shape and spirit. They descend in one continuous line from his father's works and preserve the distinctive charm of Junxian clay toys. His pieces are small, elegant, sturdy, and easy to carry. His representative works include Dujiaoshou (The One-Horned Beast), Lion Rolling an Embroidered Ball, and Da Afu (The Great Afu).

Honors & Recognition

He is a national representative bearer of Clay Sculpture (Junxian nigugu clay whistles), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
