Hu Xiping
Lineage & School of Heritage
The Tongzi Opera art of his grandfather and father fused the martial and the civil in one, with superb technique and a style of its own, and was highly esteemed among the people.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Influenced and shaped by his elders, he loved Tongzi Opera from childhood and trained hard in martial skills, laying a solid foundation for his artistic career. He not only fully inherited the performing art of his predecessors but also innovated boldly: such skills as dao quan dai wan (passing through a ring of knives while carrying a bowl), dao gong dao quan (the inverted knife-ring feat), san zhang ban ping tai (the three-and-a-half-zhang platform) and tai pan (carrying the judge) were all innovations made within the traditional art. He in turn passed these skills on to his son Hu Dexin, advancing the transmission of Nantong Tongzi Opera.
