Li Jinghua
Lineage & School of Heritage
In 1945 she entered the Caozhou Hongyi Troupe, also known as the Gongyi Troupe and later renamed the Caozhou Xinyi Opera Society, to study Erjiaxian performance under Wang Wende, a renowned sixth-generation actor of the genre.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Born in November 1939 in Heze, Shandong Province, she is of Han ethnicity. In 1951 she moved with her troupe into the newly established Heze Prefecture Erjiaxian Company, where she specialised in the boudoir maiden (guimendan) and vivacious maiden (huadan) roles. She has carried forward the traditional artistic style of Erjiaxian, placing emphasis on vocal accomplishment and exploring in depth the colloquial resources of the local dialect. Her melodic lines are lilting and naturally fluent, rapid without confusion and slow without interruption, sorrowful without loss of beauty and angry without loss of refinement; she leads the voice with emotion, so that sound and feeling animate each other. At the same time she has drawn widely on the strengths of other genres, reforming Erjiaxian qupai such as Nianzi, Zanzi and Kantoujue, so that her art feels archaic without being antiquated, charming without being flashy, and high-pitched without being coarse.
Honors & Recognition
She is a national representative bearer of Erjiaxian, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
