Chen Weiyan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
In 1940, Chen Weiyan first came into contact with the art of festive lanterns and received instruction from Sun Weijun; he has since become one of the principal representative figures of modern and contemporary Xiashi lantern art. Chen Weiyan drew widely upon the strengths of others. He frequently discussed and exchanged techniques with lantern artists of his own generation, and after decades of refinement he came to command deeply the eight traditional techniques of Xiashi lantern-making, summarized as painting, bending, framing, knotting, carving, mounting, pricking, and pasting. In 1997, building upon the traditional craft, Chen Weiyan broke new ground by combining the teapot with lantern art, creating a new variety of Xiashi lantern, the teapot lantern (chahu deng), which creatively fused lantern culture with tea culture.
