Lineage & School of Heritage

From childhood, Li Zhuqin studied painting, papercutting, lantern-making, and other crafts under her father, Li Yaobao.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

A woman of Han ethnicity, she was born in 1941 in Quanzhou, Fujian. She is a national representative bearer of Lantern Art (Quanzhou flower lanterns), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Arts and Crafts of Fujian Province. In 1957, Li Zhuqin became an apprentice at an arts and crafts factory, where she studied papercutting as well as the design and production of boneless papercut silk-thread lanterns (liaosi huadeng). After several years of hard work, she had essentially mastered the purely handmade crafts of lantern-making and papercutting. Over several decades of practice, through long study and hands-on experience, she has continually produced new works, designing more than a hundred papercut patterns of widely varied imagery and silk-thread lanterns of graceful form. Li Zhuqin's lantern art is an art form that combines hereditary family techniques with techniques from outside the family, and it is characterized by diversity and inclusiveness. In 2004, she collected and organized the large number of lantern drafts and physical works left behind by her father, and compiled and published the Selected Papercuts of Li Yaobao, contributing her share to the promotion of folk arts and crafts. Her representative works include Xiuqiu (Embroidered Ball), Shuanglong Xizhu (Twin Dragons Playing with a Pearl), and Yuzan Deng (Jade Hairpin Lantern).
