Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Dai ethnicity, born in February 1956 in Jinghong, Yunnan Province. She began learning zhangha singing at the age of ten, taking as her teachers the renowned zhangha bearers Kanglang Shuai and Yan Peng, and mastered both the technique of zhangha singing and the content of the various zhangha repertoires. Because of her exceptional singing skill, breadth of knowledge, ability to respond on the spot and wide renown, the Dai people honoured her with the titles Borui and Nanwan, which in the Dai language mean a zhangha of the highest grade and a celebrated female zhangha singer. Her voice carried across the whole prefecture through radio and television and reached audiences beyond the border. She composed more than twenty zhangha librettos, two of which won third prizes for creative writing from the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and the Yunnan Federation of Literary and Art Circles respectively. The seven disciples she trained have now completed their apprenticeship and begun to perform independently.
