自幼随父常连安、兄长常宝堃学艺，9岁开始登台演出，艺名“三蘑菇”。

国家一级演员。
曾任天津市相声研究会会长、天津市曲艺家协会副主席。
在张寿臣、罗荣寿等相声大师的熏陶和指点下，勤学苦练，16岁开始挑大梁，在京津两地频繁演出。
他继承了常派相声明快干脆、潇洒大方的风格，又具有口齿伶俐、表演洒脱的特点，在表演风格和相声创作上均突出“新”字，是对传统相声艺术继承、革新、发展卓有建树的艺术家。
自1958年开始，先后改编和创作了数十个相声新段和多场曲艺剧，有些作品成为相声传承与发展的范本而广为流传。
还曾反串京剧、出演电影角色，长期深入部队、工厂、农村演出，为相声在新时期的发展不遗余力。

男，满族，1929年12月生，2015年1月去世，天津市人。
第三批国家级非物质文化遗产项目相声代表性传承人。
