Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Every year during the Lantern Festival, Quanzhou holds lantern exhibitions; the colorful art of festive lanterns is one of the most representative forms of local culture in Quanzhou. While studying at Fujian Normal University, Cai Binghan developed a deep interest in folk festive lanterns, and in his subsequent work he continuously studied and taught himself the craft of lantern-making. Beginning in 1978, Cai Binghan pioneered the Boneless Flower Lantern (Wugu Huadeng), entering it in the Quanzhou Lantern Festival lantern exhibitions year after year and adding a new variety to the Quanzhou lantern repertoire. He also made use of the principle of air convection to create the Swimming Fish Lantern (Youyu Deng). His other representative works include Zhongxing Gongyue (Stars Surrounding the Moon), Chunguang Yipin (Spring Splendor of the First Grade), and Wugong Chunxiao (Spring Dawn at the Palace of Wu).
