In 1949 he studied the traditional long-form pingci Bai She Zhuan (The Legend of the White Snake) and Shuang Zhu Feng (A Pair of Pearl Phoenixes) under Lai Jinxian, a celebrated master of Hangzhou pingci.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
In 1950 he joined the Hangzhou pinghua Wengu Society, and in 1958 he joined the Hangzhou Quyi Troupe as a leading pingci performer in its pinghua team. His representative repertoire included Bai She Zhuan (The Legend of the White Snake) and Shuang Zhu Feng (A Pair of Pearl Phoenixes), and he was especially acclaimed for the former. He was not only an accomplished performer but also diligent in writing and staging new repertoire; his new long-form Hangzhou pingci works Yu Qian and Shi Wu Guan (Fifteen Strings of Cash) were influential. Throughout the 1960s he performed Hangzhou pingci for the public in factories and teahouses in his spare time, and worked to collate the source materials of the art. The performance script of the traditional long-form Hangzhou pingci Bai She Zhuan, dictated by him and edited by Chen Qingsheng, was printed as a book in 2008.
Honors & Recognition
Male, Han, born in September 1926, died in February 2011, a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. National representative bearer of Hangzhou Pingci, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
