Yang Zenggui
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A man of Han ethnicity, he was born in 1944 in Xining, Qinghai. From childhood, Yang Zenggui learned carpentry from his maternal uncle, Li Zengrui. He became skilled at making all kinds of furniture, at carved decoration on wooden objects, and at making musical instruments, which laid a solid foundation for his craft of making paideng row lanterns. In recent years, Yang Zenggui has gradually developed his own distinctive experience and methods in the design, carving, and production of row lanterns. Building upon the traditional paideng craft, he has boldly reformed and innovated, adopting modern techniques of light, electricity, and sound. The imagery on his lanterns is all-encompassing, making the paideng more vivid and beautiful.
