A man of Han ethnicity, he was born in 1944 in Jieshou, Anhui. He is a national representative bearer of Jieshou Caitao Firing Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. Jieshou caitao painted pottery possesses a plain and unadorned national style and strong local characteristics. Wang Jingsheng began his career in the craft in 1960. Under the guidance of the older generation of potters, he studied every stage of the process with great diligence and soon mastered the entire production workflow. From the 1970s he served as director of the painted-pottery workshop, and after the 1980s he became deputy director of the factory in charge of technology, responsible for the factory's technical work, ceramic research, and the development of new products, with remarkable results. Hand-thrown shaping is technically demanding and is the key to a vessel's form. The bodies Wang Jingsheng throws are even in thickness, with elegant vessel shapes and flowing lines. His pottery technique is comprehensive and refined, and his works are finely made. While inheriting the traditional style, he also dares to innovate and constantly strives for perfection; his works come in a great variety of types, ever changing. His representative works include the Special-Form Large Twin-Dragon Vase, Taoshou (a set of animal figures), and the Sancai (three-color) carved flower vase. Although Wang Jingsheng has now retired, he continues to refine and innovate his technique; he created his own pottery bowl (taoyi wan), actively participates in artistic exchange, and devotes himself to the transmission of painted-pottery craft and the development of new products.
