Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Liu Zemian, a male of Han ethnicity, was born in 1937 in Foshan, Guangdong. He is a national representative bearer of Shiwan Pottery Sculpture Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. His works draw on the strengths of many schools, synthesizing them into a style of his own, characterized by vigor and lifelikeness as well as rustic simplicity and weight. In shaping human figures, he pays particular attention to anatomical structure in the rendering of drapery and musculature, achieving excellence in both the meticulous and the freehand modes and in both form and spirit, with a strong flavor of traditional Shiwan pottery art. He has made active contributions to the inheritance and development of Shiwan pottery art; his works have been exhibited in many large-scale exhibitions at home and abroad, and he has personally visited National Taiwan University and Louisiana State University in the United States to disseminate Shiwan pottery art. In 1987 and 1997 he held solo exhibitions of his works in Hong Kong, China. Influenced by the family atmosphere, his four children successively entered the pottery-making profession, and each has attained achievements of their own in the craft. Liu Zemian's representative works include The Source of Strength, Eighteen Arhats and Laozi, of which The Source of Strength and Eighteen Arhats have been collected by the National Art Museum of China.
