Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Yang Bailiang, a female of the Li ethnic group, was born in 1935 in Changjiang Li Autonomous County, Hainan. She is a national representative bearer of Li Yuanshi Pottery Making Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. Li pottery is made from clay, with the vessel bodies formed entirely by hand, and fired at a low temperature of 600 to 700 degrees Celsius; this technique has always been transmitted by women. Yang Bailiang began learning to make Li pottery from her mother in 1948, and mastered the primitive pottery-making technique of the Li people. Thereafter, through constant practice in production and daily life, her pottery-making skill grew ever more mature, and she became a well-known local pottery artisan. The pottery works she produces are simple in form, bold in style and relatively thin in body, bearing the character of primitive pottery art. Yang Bailiang has been engaged in pottery making for many years and has produced a large number of vessels for the use of the local Li people, some of which have been collected by the Changjiang Li Autonomous County Museum. In order to ensure the transmission of the Li pottery-making technique, she began taking on apprentices in 1998, and to date six people have become skilled potters under her guidance.
