Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Abudoureheman Maimaitiming, a male of Uyghur ethnicity, was born in 1958 in Yingjisha, Xinjiang. He is a national representative bearer of Uyghur Mozhifatutao Firing Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He is the third-generation disciple of the master Maimaitiming Sawuer, and began learning earthenware making from his father at the age of 14; owing to his natural intelligence, in less than half a year his earthenware firing skill surpassed that of many adults. The earthenware he produces has distinctive forms and outstanding craftsmanship, the plain pottery and the glazed pottery showing the greatest ingenuity. The plain pottery, through fine processes of trimming, scraping, joining and openwork carving of patterns, achieves an effect of simplicity without poverty; the glazed pottery, according to the different proportions of minerals in its glaze mixture, displays glaze colors ranging from dark green, light green, brown, earthy yellow and earthy red to cream yellow and white. His main works include jars, washing ewers, washing basins, vases and bowls, which are delicate and of classic simplicity, possess a typical Uyghur style, and have won the praise of many renowned masters. Among them, his Abuduwa (a ewer for holding washing water) is made at the highest level in all of Xinjiang.
