Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Meng Shufeng, a male of Han ethnicity, was born in 1955 in Tongchuan, Shaanxi. He is a national representative bearer of Yaozhou Yao Ceramic Firing Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. From an early age Meng Shufeng learned pottery making with his family in the family workshop, and was later admitted to study at the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. Yaozhou kiln ceramic firing is a purely local and ancient craft that, after being interrupted for 800 years, was revived in modern times; after entering the Chenlu Ceramic Factory in Tongchuan, Meng Shufeng researched and restored Yaozhou celadon and Tongchuan folk porcelain, and trained basic technical teams for these two types of porcelain. Meng Shufeng created the "two-knife method" and the "half-knife mud" forms of carving, engraving and floral incision in Yaozhou porcelain production, the knife work being sharp-edged, fluent and boldly unrestrained. His ceramic works are solidly grounded, refined and bold in conception, and possess considerable artistic value. His representative works include the Orchid Umbrella Pail and the Orchid Nine-Fortune Bowl.
