Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Xu Chaoxing, a male of Han ethnicity, was born in 1943 in Longquan, Zhejiang. He is a national representative bearer of the Traditional Firing Technology of Longquan Celadon, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. For fifty-five years, building on the traditional technological characteristics of Longquan celadon, he has constantly explored and innovated with determination, forming his own distinctive technical features and artistic style, which are manifested mainly in his command of vessel shapes, the refinement of his workmanship, the evenness and thickness of his glazes, his decorative techniques and his treatment of surface texture. He successively developed new techniques such as pierced linglong celadon, thin-bodied celadon, dotted crackle patterning and exposed-body decoration, which have won widespread acclaim in the ceramic world. At the same time, he has actively engaged in teaching, taking on a number of apprentices in succession and, at the invitation of the China Academy of Art, providing technical instruction there on many occasions. His representative works include the China-US Friendship Linglong Lamp, the Vase of Prosperity for All Nations and Auspicious Celebration, and the Elder-Younger Kiln Blend Three-Ring Vase.
