Wang Suhua
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Han ethnicity, born in April 1935 in Fengqiu County, Henan Province. She is a Chinese Master of Arts and Crafts. Fond of embroidery since childhood, she began studying the craft under her maternal grandmother, Han Chengshi, at the age of ten, and at thirteen studied under her mother; by the age of sixteen she could independently embroider silk satin quilt covers. In 1957 she worked at the Kaifeng Bianxiu Factory, where she served successively as deputy workshop director, workshop director, deputy factory director and factory director, and she is now chairman of the Kaifeng Suhua Song Embroidery Craft Co., Ltd. On the basis of immersing herself in everyday life, conducting field surveys and inheriting, excavating and collating the old techniques of Song embroidery, she innovated more than a dozen stitches, including the rolling-needle stitch, the reverse-securing stitch, the mat-splint stitch and the anchor-rope stitch, which strengthened the vividness and three-dimensionality of Bianxiu expression, giving it refinement and elegance without losing a strong folk flavour and forming a distinctive personal style. In 1959 her embroidery of the Song dynasty master Zhang Zeduan's famous painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival was displayed in the Henan Hall of the Great Hall of the People as Henan Province's presentation for the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
