In 1956 Su Qinghe entered the Sculpture Section of the Dehua Porcelain Factory, where he studied ceramic techniques under Su Qinming.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He is a national representative bearer of Dehua Ci Firing Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts, and a recipient of the special government allowance of the State Council. He worked in ceramic arts and crafts for more than fifty years, serving successively at porcelain factories in Jianyang, Gutian, and Dongcheng and Baomei in Dehua. While inheriting the excellent artistic techniques of Dehua porcelain sculpture, he continuously innovated and developed them. In 1994 he completed the research and development of Yingyu Hong (Ying-Jade Red), a new type of porcelain. Yingyu Hong is a variant of Hai'er Hong (Child's Red), a rare transmutation-fired porcelain that enjoyed worldwide fame in the Ming dynasty; its body is fine and dense, pure and flawless, with body and glaze fused as one, crystal clear, suffused with red upon white, warm and elegant, beautiful as white jade, and exceptionally lovely under illumination. His representative works include the Ji Yan Vase and the Three Saints of the Huayan Assembly, of which the Guanyin Standing on a Lotus and the Guanyin Seated on a Rock have been collected by the National Art Museum of China.
Honors & Recognition
Su Qinghe, a male of Han ethnicity, was born in 1941 in Dehua, Fujian, and died in 2012. Su Qinghe persistently cultivated inheritors of Dehua porcelain firing craftsmanship, and through his efforts some of his disciples have become rising stars in this field.
