Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Bai ethnicity, born in June 1942 in Dali, Yunnan Province. He has carried out architectural painting in Binchuan, Kunming and other places, mastering the processes and techniques of Bai painting and developing characteristics of his own. He has innovated on the traditional basis: the patterns he paints blend harmoniously with the architecture, and on flat painted surfaces he adds relief where the design calls for it, strengthening the three-dimensional quality of the painted decoration. Representative works include the large spirit screen of Zhusheng Temple in Dali, Jizu Shan Daofang Quanjing Tu (Panorama of the Daoist Precincts of Mount Jizu), the Mo Long Tu (Ink Dragon) in the cultural relics room of Mount Jizu, and the spirit-screen painting of the Bai village in the Yunnan Nationalities Village. He attaches importance to transmitting the craft and is committed to guiding and taking part in the painting of dwellings in the surrounding villages; his disciples include Li Yanfeng (his son), Zheng Tang and Yang Hu.
