Liu Xianglan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, of Li ethnicity, she was born in March 1969 in Wuzhishan, Hainan Province. She is a representative bearer of Traditional Li Textile Techniques, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. At 13 she began learning Li brocade weaving from her mother, Huang Guizhen, and by 15 she had mastered the brocade techniques of the Li Qi dialect group; over years of sustained practice she has continued to refine the forms of the craft and raise her level of skill. She applies the four traditional Li techniques of spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidery as practiced in the Wuzhishan area to the making of garments, bed mats, tube skirts, headscarves and wall hangings. In 2006 she founded the Wuzhishan Xianglan Brocade Professional Cooperative, which helped raise the incomes of nearby farmers. She places emphasis on transmission, going into villages to teach the craft, and has been engaged by numerous primary and secondary schools and vocational schools to teach Li brocade weaving, training a large number of students who have mastered the technique.
