Zhu Feng graduated in his early years from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied the traditional techniques of Chinese painting under Liu Haisu; in 1954 he joined the Nanjing Yunjin Rescue and Protection Group, becoming one of the first generation of Yunjin art researchers after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and he has long been engaged in research and practice concerning the patterns and colors of Nanjing Yunjin.

He is a national representative bearer of the Craftsmanship of Nanjing Yunjin Brocade, the hand-weaving of zhuanghua (figured brocade) on wooden looms and a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, a senior arts and crafts artist at the Nanjing Yunjin Research Institute, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. He attained profound erudition in research on the technology, design style, culture and art of Yunjin; he summarized the characteristics of the art of color matching in Yunjin and published a monograph on the subject, bringing the art of Yunjin color matching to an effect that is rich yet not heavy, brilliant yet not vulgar, and elaborate yet not chaotic. He is a grand master of Yunjin design and color matching since the founding of the Yunjin Research Institute. His representative works include the Zhuanghua Satin of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, Butterflies among Flowers, and Ten Thousand Purples and a Thousand Reds on Gold Ground. His major writings include A View of the Style and Techniques of Yunjin from the Aesthetic Perspective of Contrast and Harmony and The Artistic Laws of Cloud Patterns in Yunjin.
