Wu Shuisen
Lineage & School of Heritage
He is a senior craft artist and the seventh-generation successor of Wu Luheng, a master of the luojing (geomantic compass).
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He is a national representative bearer of Wan'an Luopan Making Craftsmanship, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In childhood he learned the Wan'an compass making craft from his father, Wu Weicang, who won the gold medal at the first Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. In 1992 he founded the Wan'an Wu family direct-lineage compass shop. In the same year, a Huizhou woodcarved 'auspicious cloud' compass that he made by reconstructing the traditional craft was presented as a Beijing Olympic Games gift to Juan Antonio Samaranch, honorary life president of the International Olympic Committee.

Born in June 1949 in Xiuning County, Anhui Province, he was of Han ethnicity and died in February 2014. In 2008 the Wan'an gift compass won a silver award at the second Anhui Provincial Exhibition of Fine Folk Crafts. The brand he transmitted, Wu Luheng, was named one of China's ten century-old brands of greatest historical and cultural value in 2009 and was recognised as a China Time-honoured Brand. His son Wu Zhaoguang took up his father's craft and has been recognised as a provincial representative bearer of the project.
