Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Ye Yongzhou, a male of Han ethnicity, was born in 1929 in Chengdu, Sichuan. He is a national representative bearer of Shujin Weaving Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. At the age of 14, Ye Yongzhou went to the Fan Qingyun shop, a famous Shujin handicraft workshop of the time, to learn the traditional techniques of Shujin weaving from the veteran artisan Fan Qingyun, including such skills as pattern-lifting (wanhua) and shuttle-throwing (diusuo). Thereafter, despite the changes of the times, he never interrupted his brocade weaving. Ye Yongzhou inherited the strengths of the masters of previous generations and drew widely on the best of others, mastering the art of shuttle-throwing; he greatly reduced the breakage of warp and weft threads that easily occurred during pattern-lifting and shuttle-throwing, and pioneered a perfect combination of mechanics and aesthetics that gives his brocade extremely high ornamental value. Together with Liu Chenxi, he actively explored and developed a new brocade technique: the small-shuttle floral excavation (xiaosuo wahua). The Red-Ground Eight-Reply Halo Brocade he wove is a representative Song-dynasty brocade pattern, magnificent and exquisite, with brilliant colors, and is extremely precious. Another of his patterns, the Lantern Brocade, was originally a Yuan- and Ming-dynasty court brocade pattern for the Lantern Festival, often woven in the shape of rice ears and symbolizing an abundant harvest of all grains. At present, two of Ye Yongzhou's disciples have attained a certain degree of achievement in Shujin weaving.
