Liang Zhu
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnic group, born in January 1935, a native of Foshan, Guangdong Province. A national representative bearer of Xiangyun Sha (Gambiered Canton Gauze) Dyeing and Finishing Craftsmanship, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He is a dyer and finisher of Xiangyun Sha. At fifteen he became an apprentice at the Lunjiao Lianhe Gambiering Works, where he spread the gauze in the sun as part of the dyeing process; by sixteen he had mastered the production flow and the entire set of dyeing and finishing techniques, and he is today one of the few veteran masters still skilled in the sun-drying stage of the craft. He has devoted himself to developing the Xiangyun Sha industry, insisting on traditional greige silk and gauze and on traditional dyeing and finishing methods, while also actively trying modern fabrics such as printed silk and cotton-linen blends as base materials and modern processes such as water washing and sanding for the finishing stages, so that the traditional craft has been both carried on and further developed.
