Female, of the Tujia ethnic group, born in 1967, a native of Fenghuang, Hunan. A national representative bearer of the Tujia Brocade Weaving Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. Xiangxi Tujia brocade is a craft in which the pattern is picked on the reverse side of the cloth on an inclined wooden loom; according to research, it has a history of more than fifteen hundred years. At the age of twelve, Ye Shuiyun began studying Tujia brocade weaving and folk painting under her great-aunt Ye Yucui; at fifteen she formally took Ye Yucui as her master and systematically learned the basic techniques of Tujia brocade along with a number of specialized ones. In 1983 she entered the Longshan County Brocade Factory together with Ye Yucui to serve as her assistant, taking part in the rescue and collation of the traditional patterns of Tujia brocade. In 1988 she was admitted to the fine arts program of the Fenghuang County Vocational Secondary School; after graduating with excellent results, she remained at the school as a teacher, a position she holds to this day. Her representative works include Yizi Hua (Chair Pattern), Dayan Qiang Hua (Great Rock-Wall Pattern), and Longfeng Chengxiang (Auspicious Dragon and Phoenix).
Honors & Recognition
Ye Shuiyun has been engaged in the study, production, research, and transmission of Tujia brocade for more than twenty years. Building on the legacy of her predecessors, she applied the "half-lattice" pattern-picking method to decorative figure painting and pioneered a color-gradation technique; she has taught large numbers of students and apprentices.
