Liu Daie
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, of the Tujia ethnic group, born in 1955, a native of Longshan, Hunan. A national representative bearer of the Tujia Brocade Weaving Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Brocade Weaving Craftsmanship. Liu Daie's brocade weaving craft was transmitted through the generations of her family. From the age of twelve she learned brocade weaving from her grandmother Peng Mei, and after graduating from senior high school she took up brocade weaving professionally at home. Over the course of a career in brocade weaving spanning more than forty years, she has carried on the family craft while also drawing widely upon other traditions and accumulating a broad collection; the traditional Tujia brocades she has gathered and preserved alone number more than one hundred pieces. The raw materials she uses are still prepared with meticulous care in accordance with traditional specifications, whether silk warp with cotton weft or silk in both warp and weft; her works are fine and precise in execution and very popular. In the 1980s and 1990s she was successively engaged as a master by a number of ethnic brocade factories, where she taught more than a hundred apprentices. Relying on her Laoche River Tujia Brocade Craft Workshop, the Hubei Institute for Nationalities and Jishou University established fieldwork and cultural research bases, which have achieved excellent research results. Her representative works include Yanqiang Hua (Rock-Wall Pattern) and Chuanchuan Hua (Boat Pattern).
