Lineage & School of Heritage

Three generations of his forebears were engaged in the making and playing of ethnic instruments, and from the age of six he studied with his father.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, of Uyghur ethnicity, born in May 1952 in Shufu County, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. National representative bearer of Ethnic Instrument Making Craftsmanship (Uyghur Instrument Making Craftsmanship), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He is passionately devoted to Uyghur instrument making. Over more than half a century of honing his skills he has become thoroughly versed in the techniques for making the dutar, rawap and many other Uyghur instruments. All his instruments are made entirely by hand, with fastidious workmanship: smooth surfaces, even colour, firm and seamless glue joints, and neatly aligned frets. Their timbre is clear and bright and their range wide, and they enjoy wide popularity. He has also broken new ground by replacing the hide, formerly cowhide or donkey hide, that covers the soundbox with snakeskin, giving the instruments a purer tone and greater carrying power.

Honors & Recognition

He has established a workshop for making ethnic instruments and has trained more than fifty apprentices.
