Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in December 1966 in Yi County, Hebei Province. National representative bearer of Inkstone Making Craftsmanship (Yishui Inkstone Making Craftsmanship), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. From childhood he was passionately fond of the art of Yishui inkstone carving, and he sought out renowned carving masters everywhere until he had mastered the art. He has directed the design and carving of Yishui inkstones towards greater artistic quality, visual appeal and collectability, and towards serial production and a wider variety of forms, opening the way for the making of monumental Yishui inkstones in China. In 1997 the six-tonne monumental inkstone Huigui Yan (Return Inkstone), designed under his direction, was collected by the Great Hall of the People. In 1999, together with other carvers, he designed and made the thirty-tonne monumental inkstone Zhonghua Jiulong Juyan (Great Inkstone of the Nine Dragons of China), which was collected by the China Millennium Monument.
