Quyuxiang, Male, Han, from Guangzhoupangaoshouyaoyegufenyouxiangongsi, Guangdong, is a third-batch national representative bearer of Traditional TCM Culture (Ⅸ-11). The tradition is documented in Guangzhoupangaoshouyaoyegufenyouxiangongsi, Guangdong. Within the regional tradition and school record of Traditional TCM Culture in Guangzhoupangaoshouyaoyegufenyouxiangongsi, Guangdong: The Pan and Ou families each formed a separate branch within the Lingnan pharmaceutical trade. In 1890 the brothers Pan Baishi and Pan Yingshi opened the Changchundong pharmacy in Guangzhou; the fourth son Pan Yusheng, in accordance with Lingnan's distinctive climate, simmered together lung-moistening, cough-relieving fritillary bulb with phlegm-dispelling platycodon and loquat leaf, and in 1928 produced a new medicine for relieving cough and transforming phlegm, named Chuanbei Pipa Lu; thereafter the formula was transmitted only within the Pan lineage. In 1950 Ou Yuxiang, a native of Kaiping, entered the factory, where he studied the production process with his cousins Ou Yuguang and Ou Xiangzong, preserving together the ancient simmering method along with the product standards and process regulations; working at the same counter and stove as the Pan family, he formed a second line of transmission within this century-old Guangzhou establishment. In 1890, the brothers Pan Baishi and Pan Yingshi opened a pharmacy named "Changchundong" (Cave of Everlasting Spring) in Guangzhou. Later, Pan Yusheng, the fourth son of Pan Baishi, drawing on the distinctive climatic characteristics of the Lingnan region, simmered together Sichuan fritillary bulb (chuanbeimu), which moistens the lungs and relieves cough, with platycodon root (jiegeng), which dispels phlegm, and loquat leaf; in 1928 he produced a new medicine for relieving cough and transforming phlegm, which was named "Pan Gaoshou Chuanbei Pipa Lu" (Fritillary Bulb and Loquat Leaf Syrup).

02 · Mastery & Signature Works

In 1950 he entered the Pan Gaoshou pharmaceutical factory as a pharmaceutical worker, learning the production technique for Pan Gaoshou Chuanbei Pipa Syrup (Fritillaria and Loquat Syrup) from his cousins Qu Yuguang and Qu Xiangzong. He gained a comprehensive command of the traditional preparation techniques for Chinese patent medicines such as Chuanbei Pipa Syrup, took part in formulating the variety standards and process specifications for Pan Gaoshou traditional Chinese medicines, standardized the production and quality management of Chinese patent medicines, and contributed to various technical renovations that promoted the development of traditional varieties. After his retirement he remained dedicated to transmission work, frequently passing on to younger technicians his knowledge and skills in producing classical-formula orthodox medicines. Within the documented technical tradition of Traditional TCM Culture in Guangzhoupangaoshouyaoyegufenyouxiangongsi, Guangdong: Traditional Chinese medicine is the study of human life and of human health that took shape in ancient Chinese society; it is not a simple accumulation of prescriptions, drugs, individual techniques, and tricks, but a body of knowledge concerning human life and health. This body of knowledge has a profound traditional cultural background. With its distinctive philosophical thinking, systematic foundational theories, rich scientific content, and distinct humanistic character, it stands tall in the forest of world medicine. It is both one of the living forms of traditional Chinese culture and a vast space for the further development of that culture. For example, the way of nourishing life through tranquility and authenticity, the therapeutic principles of harmony, balance, and the golden mean, the conception of life grounded in inner serenity, the criterion of the medical way that puts people first, and the professional norm of honesty and good faith — all of these run through every aspect of the theory and practice of Chinese medicine. They have become the soul of all its figures, writings, artifacts, and undertakings, and also the fine tradition and professional dedication that today's Chinese medicine enterprises and institutions are proud to carry forward. As a "time-honored Chinese brand," Pan Gaoshou originated a unique production process for its Chuanbei Pipa Lu syrup, a prominent expression of a Lingnan pharmaceutical culture that is rooted in tradition yet boldly innovative. Strict control of high-quality raw materials and a rigorous production process gave Pan Gaoshou a preeminent position in the antitussive drug industry, making it the most outstanding representative of China's domestic cough medicines. Representative repertoire, works and technical entries recorded for the project include: "Archival Records of Process Steps": Strict control of high-quality raw materials and a rigorous production process gave Pan Gaoshou a preeminent position in the antitussive drug industry, making it the most outstanding representative of China's domestic cough medicines. "The fritillary and loquat formula": Fritillary bulb combined with platycodon and loquat leaf, decocted in 1928 to suit the Lingnan climate and became the house product. "Drawing up standards and process rules": Qu Yuxiang helped draw up standards for the traditional products and process rules, regularising production and quality control. "Teaching the old formulas after retirement": After retirement he kept teaching young workers how to make the classical preparations, keeping the craft of Changchun Dong alive.
