Yangshiyu
Lineage & School of Heritage
From childhood Yangshiyu learned from his father, deeply absorbing the techniques passed down in the family, and he has inherited and developed the most distinctive Dong cultural traditions of the wind-and-rain bridges, drum towers, and diaojiaolou (stilted houses).
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of the Dong ethnic group, born in 1955, a native of Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, Guangxi. A national representative bearer of the Dong Timber Architectural Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. Relying solely on the thirteen special timber-construction characters (xueshi wen) handed down through the generations, such as the "xianggan" and the "zhuda," together with a few simple building tools, he is able to erect buildings accurately and astonishingly well, and he never needs to draw plans (as a rule he takes one look at the terrain and the design is fixed in his mind). It was under such seemingly inconceivable conditions that the world-renowned Chengyang Yongji Bridge in Sanjiang, Guangxi, and the Sanjiang Drum Tower were successfully built. Yangshiyu has designed more than one hundred diaojiaolou (stilted houses), six large wind-and-rain bridges, more than three hundred small wind-and-rain bridges, six ordinary drum towers, and more than twenty pavilions of various sizes.
