Nongfengmei
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Zhuang ethnic group, born in April 1965 in Funing County, Yunnan Province. A singer of the Poya Love Songs. From childhood she learned mountain songs from her grandmother, who often taught her to draw the eighty-one symbols of the Poya Love Songs and to sing the eighty-one love songs that correspond to them. She is thoroughly familiar with each song and with every symbol it contains. Through years of learning that combined hand and voice, she mastered all the lyrics and melodies of the Poya Love Songs, and she inherited a particular method of recording them: painting the song symbols on homespun cloth with the juice of cactus fruit. She has collected and preserved the earliest known symbol text of the Poya Love Songs.
